What should you know about late and heavy period?

Ovulation can shift with stress, illness, weight change, perimenopause, or polycystic ovary syndrome. When the womb lining has had longer to build, the next bleed may be heavier, but that explanation should not be assumed without considering pregnancy and other causes.

Fibroids, adenomyosis, endometrial polyps, and endometrial hyperplasia can contribute to heavy bleeding. Ongoing blood loss may lead to iron deficiency anaemia, with tiredness, breathlessness, dizziness, or paleness. The timing, amount, clots, pain, and pregnancy possibility help guide assessment.

If pregnancy is possible, take a pregnancy test and contact a clinician for advice, particularly if bleeding is unusual for you. Record when the bleeding began, how often you change period products, whether clots are present, and any pain or dizziness.

Arrange a medical review if this pattern repeats, disrupts daily life, or leaves you exhausted. Assessment may include a pregnancy test, blood tests for anaemia, and an examination or scan. Treatment depends on the cause and whether you want contraception or pregnancy.

Seek urgent care for very heavy bleeding with faintness, severe weakness, shortness of breath, severe one-sided pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, or collapse. These symptoms need prompt assessment, especially when pregnancy is possible. Get same-day advice if pain or bleeding is rapidly worsening.
