What should you know about last stages of lung cancer?

Advanced lung cancer can involve the chest, nearby lymph nodes, or distant organs such as the brain. Symptoms vary: breathlessness, chest discomfort, cough, fatigue, reduced appetite, or a hoarse voice may occur, but a hoarse voice is not by itself proof of cancer. Brain metastases can cause headache, weakness, confusion, speech changes, or seizures. The cancer type, scan findings, general health, and previous treatment all shape the outlook and choices.

Ask which aim is being prioritised now: slowing the cancer, reducing a tumour-related problem, or improving comfort. Genomic tumour profiling may identify features that guide medicine choices. Depending on the situation, options can include chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or carefully selected surgery such as lung lobectomy. Palliative care can begin alongside cancer treatment and may help with pain, breathing difficulty, sleep, anxiety, nutrition, and family support. Write down medicines, symptoms, and the questions that matter most to you.

Contact the oncology team promptly for worsening breathlessness, new chest pain, coughing blood, inability to keep fluids down, rapidly increasing confusion, or a new seizure. Call emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, collapse, or sudden one-sided weakness. Do not wait for the next appointment if a symptom changes quickly.
