What should you know about laser treatment for burns?

Different devices target different features. Vascular lasers may reduce visible redness, while resurfacing lasers can make a raised, tight, or uneven scar more flexible and smoother. Pigment-targeting approaches may be considered when a healed area remains darker or lighter than nearby skin. A clinician first checks whether the burn is fully closed, whether scar tissue is still changing, and whether movement is restricted.

Laser does not replace wound care, surgery, physiotherapy, or scar massage when those are needed. Skin tone, scar thickness, location, itch, pain, and a history of darkening after inflammation all affect the plan.

Arrange an assessment with a dermatologist or burn-scar specialist. Bring details of the injury, previous procedures, current creams, and any changes in the scar. Avoid treating an open, infected, blistered, or sunburned area unless the treating team specifically directs you. Follow instructions about sun protection and skin products before and after each session; recently irritated skin can react more strongly.

Ask how the area will be protected during treatment, what healing usually looks like for your scar, and whether a small test area is appropriate. Temporary redness, swelling, crusting, colour change, or tenderness can occur, so plan gentle aftercare and avoid picking.

Seek prompt medical care for a burn that is deep, spreading, newly blistered, increasingly painful, or not healing. Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial or eye involvement, extensive injury, or signs of infection such as worsening warmth, pus, fever, or red streaks. Contact your treatment team if a treated scar becomes very swollen, develops severe pain, or changes colour markedly.
