Laser Treatment for Burn Marks

A burn can leave a flat change in colour, a thick raised scar, or a tight scar that restricts movement. Laser energy can be selected to address surface texture, redness, or pigment, depending on the scar and the surrounding skin. It is generally considered only after the wound has closed and the clinician has assessed healing. A laser cannot restore missing skin or release every contracture; deeper injury may require reconstructive planning.

Bring details about the original burn, grafts, infections, previous scar treatments, and any changes in movement. Tell the clinician if the scar itches, cracks, bleeds, or becomes raised. Use the recommended moisturising and sun-protection routine, and do not apply numbing products or active creams without instructions. Fractional Laser Treatment may be discussed for texture; Scar Revision Surgery or a Skin Graft may be considered when scar structure or function needs a surgical solution.

Arrange specialist review for a scar that is tightening across a joint, limiting the mouth or eyelid, repeatedly cracking, or becoming increasingly raised and itchy. A new blister, open area, spreading redness, drainage, fever, or escalating pain needs medical assessment rather than cosmetic treatment. After laser, report delayed healing, infection signs, severe swelling, or a worrying colour change.

Ask what feature the laser is targeting, whether the scar is mature enough, how many stages may be needed, and how pigment risk will be reduced. Ask whether movement or scar tightness makes surgical review more appropriate.
