What should you know about laser to remove burn scars?

Burn scars can be raised, depressed, firm, itchy, discoloured, or tight across a joint. Fractional laser treatment creates controlled microscopic treatment zones that can encourage scar remodelling and improve texture or flexibility over time. It does not erase the history of an injury, and the result depends on the scar’s depth, location, age, and how your skin heals.

A scar that restricts movement, reopens, or remains very active may need a broader scar plan. Scar revision surgery can change the shape or tension of selected scars, while a skin graft may be considered when there is inadequate coverage or a larger defect. These options are different from cosmetic resurfacing.

Bring details about the original burn, previous operations, grafts, infections, medicines, and any tendency to form thick scars. The clinician should check whether the skin is fully closed and whether the scar is stable enough for treatment. Several appointments may be needed, with spacing determined by healing and the treatment area.

After laser, follow wound-care instructions closely. The area may be red, swollen, tender, or temporarily darker or lighter. Keep it protected from sun, avoid picking or friction, and use dressings or ointments exactly as advised. Rehabilitation exercises may matter when a scar crosses a joint, but only follow a plan suited to your injury.

Contact the treating team for increasing pain, spreading redness, warmth, drainage, wound separation, worsening itch, or new limitation of movement. Seek urgent care for fever, rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain out of proportion, or a burn-scar area that becomes suddenly open or infected-looking.

Ask whether the scar is ready for laser, which part of the scar is being targeted, how healing will be protected, whether movement therapy is needed, and when surgery or grafting would be more appropriate.
