What should you know about laser syringoma?

Syringomas are small benign growths from sweat-duct structures. They often appear as firm, skin-coloured or slightly yellow bumps beneath the eyes, although they can occur elsewhere. They are not the same as every type of skin bump, so a clinician may inspect the pattern and surface before treatment. A biopsy can be considered when the appearance is unusual or uncertain.

A laser can treat individual bumps or a group of closely spaced lesions by removing or heating tissue. CO2 laser resurfacing is one possible approach. The area may be red, swollen, crusted or temporarily darker after treatment. Syringomas can recur or new ones can appear, and treatment may leave a colour change or a small scar, especially in delicate skin.

Tell the clinician about eye conditions, medicines that affect healing, previous keloids, cold sores and a tendency toward dark marks after skin injury. Ask how the eyes will be protected. Use only the cleanser, ointment and sunscreen recommended for the healing area, and do not squeeze or pick the bumps. If several lesions are present, discuss whether staged treatment would make healing easier to monitor.

Contact the clinic if redness spreads, pain increases, drainage becomes cloudy or foul, or fever develops. After treatment near the eyes, urgent assessment is needed for vision changes, severe eye pain or swelling that limits eye opening. A bump that grows quickly, bleeds or changes colour should be reassessed rather than repeatedly treated as a syringoma.

Ask how the diagnosis was established, whether a biopsy is useful, which laser is planned, how the eyes will be shielded, and how the risk of colour change or scarring will be managed.
