What should you know about laser melanoma removal?

Melanoma is a skin cancer that can begin in pigment-producing cells. Diagnosis depends on examining the lesion and, when appropriate, testing tissue. A laser can alter or vaporise visible pigment without providing the complete specimen needed to assess the lesion’s features and depth. That is why a suspected melanoma is generally managed through a planned excision or another cancer-surgery pathway, guided by a dermatologist or surgical team.

Further care depends on the diagnosis and stage. Some people need assessment of nearby lymph nodes, wider removal around the original site, or oncology review. Treatment may include surgery, surveillance, or medicines such as immunotherapy when clinically indicated. A melanoma can present as a new or changing dark spot, but many dark spots are not melanoma; the appearance alone cannot establish the diagnosis.

Book a prompt skin assessment for a new, changing, bleeding, itching, or unusual pigmented lesion. Bring photographs showing earlier changes and a list of medicines and previous skin procedures. Do not try to erase the lesion with a home laser, cosmetic treatment, or acid. If melanoma has already been diagnosed, follow the specialist plan and keep scheduled reviews; ask whether surgical excision, lymph-node assessment, or additional treatment is relevant.

Seek prompt medical review for a spot that is rapidly changing, repeatedly bleeding, ulcerated, very different from your other moles, or associated with a new firm lump nearby. After a procedure, urgent advice is needed for spreading redness, fever, pus, severe pain, or wound separation. New headaches, weakness, seizures, or confusion in someone with known melanoma require urgent medical attention.

Ask whether the lesion needs a biopsy or excisional surgery, how much tissue may need removal, and whether pathology will guide the next step. If melanoma is confirmed, ask about stage assessment, lymph-node testing, follow-up surveillance, sun protection, and when oncology treatment such as immunotherapy is considered.
