What should you know about laser hysterectomy?

A hysterectomy removes the womb. Depending on the reason for treatment and your anatomy, it may be performed through the abdomen, vagina, or small abdominal incisions. A laser may be discussed as a surgical instrument for a particular step, but it does not describe every part of the operation or guarantee a smaller recovery.

The ovaries and cervix may or may not be removed, depending on the diagnosis, age, symptoms, cancer concerns, and personal preferences. Hysterectomy ends periods and pregnancy, so the consultation should cover alternatives and the effect on fertility before consent.

Ask the surgeon to name the operation, route, organs to be removed, anaesthetic plan, expected hospital stay, and likely recovery restrictions. Conditions such as fibroids, adenomyosis, endometriosis, endometrial hyperplasia, or cancer may lead to different surgical plans.

Bring a list of medicines and previous operations. Ask whether you need blood tests, imaging, or a biopsy before surgery, and what symptoms should prompt a call after discharge. Discuss alternatives if preserving the womb or fertility matters to you.

After surgery, seek urgent help for severe or worsening pain, heavy bleeding, breathing difficulty, chest pain, faintness, or a fever. Contact the surgical team for wound redness, worsening swelling, foul-smelling discharge, difficulty passing urine, or symptoms that are not settling as expected.

Ask what “laser” refers to in your case, whether the cervix and ovaries will remain, how fertility will change, which alternatives exist, and how complications would be managed.
