Laser treatment for hypertrophic scars

A hypertrophic scar is a raised, firm scar that stays within the boundary of the original injury. Depending on the scar's age and activity, laser energy may target redness, remodel uneven texture or encourage a more flexible scar. A raised scar can continue changing for a long time, so treatment timing matters.

Laser is not the same as cutting the scar out. Fractional Laser Treatment creates controlled microscopic treatment zones to influence texture and scar remodelling, while other approaches may be selected for redness or thickness. A clinician may combine laser with Steroid Injection Into The Skin when the scar is particularly firm or raised.

Have the scar examined before treatment to distinguish a hypertrophic scar from a keloid, an active wound or an infection. Share your history of poor wound healing, pigment changes, cold sores, allergies and medicines. Protect the area from sun and follow instructions about moisturising, cleansing and avoiding friction after each session.

Ask how the plan will measure progress: softness, height, redness, itch, movement or discomfort. Laser may be paused if the scar is inflamed or the skin barrier is broken. Surgical Excision or Scar Revision Surgery may be considered in selected cases, but surgery can create a new scar and needs individual planning.

Contact the clinic for increasing pain, blistering, spreading redness, pus, fever or a wound that is not closing. Seek review if the scar grows beyond the original injury, becomes rapidly more raised, or restricts movement. New darkening or lightening that persists also deserves assessment, particularly in skin prone to pigment change.
