Laser hair removal and moles: what to know

The laser targets pigment in hair, so a dark mole can absorb energy differently from nearby skin. A clinician may cover or avoid the mole, mark its location, and check whether it has changed before treating the surrounding hair. Hair growing from a mole is not a reason to remove the mole yourself.

A new, changing, bleeding, crusted, persistently itchy, or unevenly coloured mole needs medical assessment rather than cosmetic treatment. Laser hair removal does not diagnose or treat skin cancer, and treating over an unexplained lesion can make later observation harder.

Show every mole in the proposed treatment area during consultation, including small or partly hidden marks. Ask how it will be shielded and whether a dermatologist should examine it first. Do not apply tanning products before treatment, because extra skin pigment can alter how the laser interacts with the skin.

Follow the clinic’s shaving and skin-care instructions, and tell the clinician about recent sun exposure, medicines, a history of unusual moles, or a tendency to form dark marks after irritation. If the area contains many pigmented spots, an alternative hair-removal method may be more practical.

Pause cosmetic treatment and arrange prompt medical review if a mole changes in size, shape, border, colour, surface, or sensation, or if it bleeds without clear injury. After treatment, seek care for blistering, worsening pain, spreading redness, pus, fever, or a mole that looks altered rather than gradually settling.
