What should you know about laser for burn scars?

A burn scar can be flat, thick, darker or lighter than nearby skin, itchy, painful, or tight across a joint. Fractional laser may create controlled micro-injuries that encourage remodelling in selected scars. It cannot replace wound care, and it may not address a deep defect, severe contracture, or missing tissue.

The scar's location, thickness, flexibility, skin tone, and healing history guide the plan. Some people need more than one type of care, such as silicone-based scar management, pressure therapy, surgery, or rehabilitation for movement.

Wait until the burn has fully closed and a clinician confirms that the skin is ready. Bring details about the original injury, previous operations, infections, allergies, and any tendency to form raised scars. Protect the area from sun and use only the aftercare products recommended for your skin.

Ask whether the goal is to improve colour, surface texture, itching, or movement. Scar revision surgery or a skin graft may be considered when laser cannot release tight tissue or replace lost skin.

Seek medical assessment for an open area, new drainage, increasing warmth, spreading redness, fever, sudden swelling, or rapidly worsening pain. Prompt review is also needed if a scar restricts a joint, interferes with walking, or limits daily movement.

Ask whether the scar is ready for laser, which feature is being targeted, and what improvement is realistic. Discuss pigment changes, wound care, downtime, alternatives, rehabilitation, and signs that need a review between visits.
