Laser and Wrinkles: What Should You Know?

Some lasers remove or heat controlled columns of surface skin. This can smooth rough texture and encourage new collagen as the area heals. Other settings heat deeper tissue with less surface disruption. Fine lines from sun exposure may respond differently from deeper folds caused by repeated facial movement or loss of volume. Wrinkles around the eyes, including Crow's Feet, may need a tailored plan because the skin is thin and the eye must be protected.

Results develop during healing and collagen remodelling rather than appearing all at once. Redness, swelling, warmth, peeling or temporary darkening can occur after treatment. Changes in pigmentation are a particular consideration for darker or recently tanned skin. A consultation should include your skincare products, medicines, history of cold sores, tendency to form raised scars and any recent tanning.

Use the clinician's preparation plan and avoid tanning before treatment. Arrive with clean skin and disclose retinoids, exfoliating acids, photosensitising medicines and previous cosmetic procedures. Afterward, follow the recommended cleanser, moisturiser and dressing routine. Do not pick peeling skin or restart strong active products until the skin barrier has recovered. Protect the area from sunlight with shade, clothing and the sunscreen advised for you; ultraviolet exposure can worsen uneven colour.

Laser is only one option. Movement-related lines may be discussed alongside Botox, while hollows or volume loss may call for dermal fillers. Sun-Damaged Skin can make wrinkles more noticeable, so a plan often combines treatment with daily photoprotection.

Contact the treating clinic promptly if pain is increasing rather than settling, blisters spread, the area becomes increasingly swollen, or discharge and crusting suggest infection. Seek urgent help for eye pain, vision change, severe facial swelling or breathing difficulty after treatment. New or persistent colour change should also be assessed, especially if it is sharply demarcated or continues after the expected healing period.

Ask which wrinkle type is being treated, whether the plan is ablative or non-ablative, what recovery will look like, and how your skin tone affects pigment risk. Clarify who performs the procedure, eye protection, preparation products, follow-up arrangements and alternatives if laser is not suitable.
