What should you know about laser alopecia areata?

Alopecia areata is an immune-mediated condition in which the body's immune response targets hair follicles. It can produce smooth round or irregular bald patches on the scalp, beard area, eyebrows or other hair-bearing skin. Some people notice nail changes or more extensive hair loss. Hair loss can have other causes, including infection, inflammation, traction or hormonal problems, so an examination matters before choosing treatment. A laser marketed for hair growth should not be assumed to treat the immune process behind alopecia areata.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if new bald patches appear, enlarge or recur. The clinician may examine the scalp and nails and ask about onset, illness, medicines, family history and other autoimmune symptoms. Depending on age, extent and pattern, options may include steroid injection into the skin, topical corticosteroids, oral corticosteroid treatment or JAK inhibitor treatment. Protect exposed scalp from sun and cold, and use gentle hair care while the diagnosis and plan are being established.

Seek prompt assessment for rapidly expanding hair loss, loss of eyebrows or eyelashes, scalp pain, scaling, pus, broken hairs or scarring. These features can point to a different or additional scalp problem. Urgent help is appropriate for facial swelling, breathing difficulty or a severe medicine reaction if treatment has already started.

Ask what supports the diagnosis, whether the scalp shows inflammation or scarring, which treatment fits the extent and location of loss, how response will be monitored, and whether a laser has a clear role in your particular case.
