Laryngitis without fever: what to know

The voice box sits at the top of the airway and contains the vocal cords. Swelling changes how they vibrate, so your voice may sound rough, breathy or disappear temporarily. A common cold can irritate the area, but fever is not required. Voice overuse, smoke, dust and acid reflux can also aggravate the vocal cords. Hoarse voice is a common presentation of laryngitis, while sore throat may occur alongside it. Symptoms often settle as the irritation improves, although persistent or repeated hoarseness deserves assessment.

Rest your voice by speaking only when needed and using a comfortable, normal volume; whispering can strain the voice too. Drink fluids, avoid smoking and smoky rooms, and consider a humid environment if dry air worsens irritation. Treat nasal congestion gently and avoid repeatedly clearing your throat. Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, noisy breathing, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, or rapidly worsening throat swelling.
