What should you know about laryngitis and the vocal cords?

The vocal cords are flexible bands of tissue that open for breathing and move together for speech. Inflammation can make them thicker and less flexible. Your voice may sound raspy, breathy or lower, and speaking may take more effort. Some people also notice a tickling cough, throat discomfort or the need to clear the throat.

A viral illness is a common trigger, while frequent shouting, prolonged talking, smoke, dry air and Acid Reflux can keep the area irritated. Common Cold symptoms may appear alongside acute laryngitis. The vocal-cord symptom itself does not identify the cause without considering the whole picture.

Use a quiet, comfortable speaking voice and take regular breaks. Avoid shouting and avoid whispering, which may also increase vocal effort. Sip water, breathe moist air and keep away from smoke or dusty environments. Try not to cough or clear your throat repeatedly; a sip or swallow can be gentler. If symptoms recur after meals or when lying down, mention possible reflux at a GP Consultation rather than starting treatment without advice.

Get urgent help if breathing becomes difficult, breathing is noisy, or you cannot swallow saliva or fluids. Book a review for persistent hoarseness, repeated voice loss, pain when speaking, a neck swelling or coughing blood. A clinician may examine your throat and voice and decide whether the vocal cords need specialist assessment.
