Laryngitis from smoking

Short answer
Smoking can repeatedly inflame and dry the larynx, causing hoarseness or laryngitis, and a persistent voice change should be checked.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why smoke changes the voice
Tobacco smoke carries heat and irritants across the throat and vocal cords. This can dry the surface, promote inflammation and make the voice rough, deeper or weaker. Coughing adds mechanical stress. Other causes, including a [Common Cold](/conditions/common-cold/), [Acid Reflux](/conditions/acid-reflux/) or voice overuse, can overlap, so smoke exposure does not explain every voice change.
A voice that improves away from smoke may still need attention if the change returns or never fully clears. Persistent hoarseness, pain or a neck lump warrants medical assessment rather than repeated self-treatment.
Reduce irritation and support recovery
Stopping smoking is the most direct way to remove the irritant; support from a clinician or stop-smoking service can make a quit attempt more manageable. Avoid second-hand smoke, keep water available, and use a relaxed speaking voice. Do not smoke to soothe stress or cover a hoarse voice with forceful speech. A [GP Consultation](/treatments/consultations-and-assessment/gp-consultation/) can review your symptoms, medicines and quitting support.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, noisy breathing, inability to swallow fluids, coughing blood or rapidly worsening throat swelling. Book a prompt appointment for hoarseness that persists, recurrent voice loss, pain on swallowing, a neck lump, unexplained weight loss or persistent ear pain. The clinician may examine the mouth and neck and arrange a vocal-cord assessment when appropriate.
Questions for your appointment
Ask what could be contributing besides smoke, whether your vocal cords need examination, and which local stop-smoking support fits your routine and health needs.
