What causes laryngitis?

Laryngitis is usually caused by inflammation of the voice box after a viral infection, voice strain, irritation or acid reflux. This swelling can make the vocal cords vibrate differently, leading to a hoarse, weak or breathy voice. A cough, throat discomfort and a need to clear the throat may occur alongside the voice change.

How the causes differ

Viral illnesses such as a common cold can inflame the throat and voice box. Bacterial infection is a less frequent cause, and a clinician may consider it when symptoms are severe or do not follow the usual pattern. Speaking loudly, singing for a long time, shouting or repeated throat clearing can overload the vocal cords.

Smoke, vaping aerosols, dusty air and other inhaled irritants can aggravate the voice box. Acid travelling upwards from the stomach may also irritate the throat and vocal cords, sometimes without obvious heartburn. Persistent voice symptoms can have causes other than short-term laryngitis, so their duration and associated symptoms matter.

What you can do

Rest your voice by speaking less and using a comfortable, quiet volume; whispering can also strain the voice. Drink fluids, use moist air if it feels soothing, and avoid smoking and smoky environments. Try not to repeatedly clear your throat, since this can maintain irritation.

If reflux seems to trigger symptoms, note whether voice changes are worse after meals or when lying down and discuss that pattern with a clinician. A [Common Cold](/conditions/common-cold/) or [Acid Reflux](/conditions/acid-reflux/) may provide useful background when you are comparing possible triggers.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical help for difficulty breathing, noisy breathing, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, or rapidly worsening throat swelling. Arrange a medical assessment if the voice change is severe, keeps returning, follows an injury, or does not improve as expected. Assessment is also sensible when hoarseness affects work or daily communication.

A [GP Consultation](/treatments/consultations-and-assessment/gp-consultation/) can help identify whether infection, vocal overuse, reflux or an irritant is most relevant. You may also want to describe related [Hoarse Voice](/symptoms/hoarse-voice/) or [Sore Throat](/symptoms/sore-throat/) symptoms.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Could my voice change be linked to an infection, reflux, voice use or an inhaled irritant? How long should I rest my voice? Which symptoms would mean I need urgent help? Do I need an examination of my throat or voice box if this keeps happening?

Questions people ask

Can a cold cause laryngitis?

Yes. A viral cold can inflame the voice box as well as the nose and throat, causing temporary hoarseness or voice loss.

Can reflux cause voice changes without heartburn?

Yes. Reflux reaching the throat can irritate the vocal cords even when typical burning discomfort is absent.

Does shouting cause laryngitis?

Shouting and prolonged loud speaking can strain and inflame the vocal cords, particularly when repeated or combined with an infection.
