Laryngitis cause cough: understanding the link

Laryngitis can cause a dry, irritating cough because inflammation makes the voice box sensitive to airflow and throat clearing. Coughing can then rub already irritated tissue, creating a cycle of tickling and more coughing. A cough may also be the trigger for laryngitis, rather than a result of it.

A viral [Common Cold](/conditions/common-cold/) may inflame the throat and voice box at the same time. Mucus draining from the nose, dry air, smoke, or repeated voice use can add irritation. If reflux seems connected, record whether cough follows meals or lying down and discuss practical changes with a pharmacist or clinician. Choose cough medicines only after checking that they suit you.

Seek urgent help for breathlessness, noisy breathing, chest pain, blue lips, coughing blood, confusion, or inability to swallow fluids. Ask whether the cough starts in the throat or chest, whether reflux or nasal drainage may contribute, and which treatment is appropriate. Tell them about smoking, allergies, recent infection, swallowing symptoms, and any medicine that began before the cough.
