What should you know about laryngitis after a cold?

A cold can inflame the throat and larynx, leaving the vocal cords swollen after congestion and other symptoms start to improve. This may cause hoarseness, a weak voice, throat clearing or a dry cough. Continued coughing, voice strain and dry air can keep the area irritated. Acid reflux is another possible contributor. Hoarse voice after a cold is common, but its persistence, severity and associated symptoms help determine whether a different problem needs checking.

Speak gently and use your normal quiet voice rather than whispering. Drink fluids, avoid smoke and give yourself breaks from talking, singing or shouting. Try not to clear your throat repeatedly; sip water instead. Manage nasal congestion as advised and notice whether meals or lying down aggravate the voice. If the hoarseness continues for two weeks, arrange a GP consultation for an examination and tailored advice.

Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, blue lips, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, severe dehydration or rapidly worsening throat swelling. Seek medical review for hoarseness that does not settle, recurring voice loss, significant pain, coughing blood, a neck lump or unexplained weight loss. Fever returning after improvement can also signal a complication that needs assessment.
