What should you know about large TENS unit pads?

Short answer
Large TENS unit pads cover more skin, but they must still be placed correctly and used with a compatible TENS unit.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Function
- Delivers electrical pulses through the skin for symptom relief.
- Pad size
- A larger pad covers more skin but still needs correct placement.
- Skin check
- Inspect the skin before and after use.
What larger pads change
A pad transfers the device’s electrical pulses through the skin. A larger surface can be useful when the painful area is broad, but size does not make a pad suitable for every body region or device. TENS is intended to influence pain signalling and does not repair a torn tissue, remove nerve pressure, or diagnose the cause of pain.
Only use pads with connectors and instructions that match your unit. Do not place them over broken, infected, numb, or irritated skin, and keep them away from the front of the neck, head, and eyes.
Using pads safely
Clean and dry the skin, attach the pads firmly, and begin at a low setting while seated. Keep the pads separated as directed, check the skin after use, and remove them before changing wires or cleaning the device. Replace pads when they no longer adhere or when the skin becomes uncomfortable. Never sleep, bathe, or drive while connected unless a clinician and the device instructions specifically say this is appropriate.
Ask a clinician before using TENS if you have an implanted electrical device, a heart rhythm condition, reduced sensation, pregnancy-related questions, or uncertainty about pad placement. A TENS unit should complement assessment rather than delay it.
When to stop and seek help
Stop using the unit if it causes burning, a persistent rash, severe pain, dizziness, palpitations, or worsening symptoms. Seek medical assessment for unexplained pain with weakness, loss of sensation, fever, major swelling, chest symptoms, or a new injury.
Questions for your doctor
Is TENS appropriate for the cause of my pain? Where should each large pad go? What intensity and session pattern should I use? Are there areas or medicines that make TENS unsuitable for me? How will we know whether it is helping?

Questions people ask
Are large pads stronger than small pads?
Not automatically. The sensation depends on the device settings, pad placement, skin contact, and the person using it.
Can I put large pads directly over a painful spot?
Placement depends on the body area and the suspected cause. Follow the device guidance or obtain advice rather than placing pads over damaged or numb skin.
