Short answer

Large pores and textured skin often reflect oil, congestion, sun exposure, acne changes or reduced skin elasticity, and can usually be softened with consistent care.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it may mean

Pores are openings around hair follicles and oil glands. They can look more noticeable when oil and dead skin collect at the opening, or when the surrounding skin has lost some firmness. Past acne inflammation may leave uneven texture, while sun-damaged skin can make pores and fine lines easier to see. The appearance is often strongest on the nose, cheeks, forehead and chin, but texture can occur elsewhere.

Large pores alone do not establish a diagnosis. A clinician can distinguish open comedones, acne-related marks, scarring, irritation and changes linked with photoaging by examining the skin.

Ways to improve texture

Use a gentle cleanser and a non-comedogenic moisturiser, and avoid squeezing or harsh scrubs that can irritate the follicle openings. Daily broad-spectrum sun protection helps limit further texture changes. A clinician may discuss topical retinoids for cell turnover and congestion, or microneedling when uneven texture or shallow acne scarring is a main concern. Introduce active products gradually, especially if your skin stings or flakes.

When to seek care

Arrange a dermatology assessment if texture changes quickly, lesions are painful, acne is persistent, or a spot bleeds, crusts or does not heal. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, marked swelling, warmth or fever. These features need assessment because they may indicate inflammation or infection rather than a cosmetic pore concern.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the texture is mainly due to oil, acne, scarring, irritation or sun-related change; which active ingredient suits your skin; and whether a procedure is appropriate for your skin tone, sensitivity and healing history.

Questions people ask

Can pores be permanently closed?

Pores cannot be removed, but their appearance may become less noticeable when oil, congestion and sun-related changes are managed.

Does scrubbing reduce large pores?

Harsh scrubbing can worsen irritation and roughness; gentle cleansing and a suitable treatment plan are safer approaches.
