What should you know about large core needle biopsy?

Short answer

A large core needle biopsy removes several small cylinders of tissue through a hollow needle so a laboratory can examine the cells and tissue structure.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the test involves

The clinician cleans the skin, uses local anaesthetic and guides the needle to the area of concern. Imaging such as ultrasound may help position it accurately. Several tissue cores can be collected through the same small skin opening. A dressing covers the site afterward. The sample can show whether cells are benign or malignant and can provide details that help classify a tumour and plan treatment.

A core biopsy differs from fine needle aspiration because it removes a tissue fragment rather than mainly loose cells. The exact method depends on the body area, its depth and the imaging available.

Before and after the biopsy

Tell the team about blood-thinning medicines, bleeding problems, allergies and pregnancy. Follow instructions about medicines and food before the appointment. Keep the dressing clean and avoid strenuous activity for the period advised. Mild tenderness or bruising can occur. Use only the pain relief recommended for you, and ask when you may resume usual medicines or exercise.

When to seek care

Call the clinic if bleeding continues despite firm pressure, swelling increases, the site becomes hot or increasingly painful, or you develop fever or drainage. Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, fainting, rapidly expanding swelling or symptoms that feel severe after the procedure.

Questions for your doctor

Ask why a core sample is recommended, which imaging will guide it, how medicines should be adjusted, when the report is expected, and whether another test or procedure may be needed if the sample is insufficient.

Questions people ask

Is a core biopsy the same as fine needle aspiration?

No. Core biopsy collects tissue fragments, while fine needle aspiration mainly collects individual cells or fluid. The choice depends on the question being investigated.

Can I return home after the biopsy?

Many people go home after observation, but arrangements depend on the biopsy site, sedation and your health.
