What should you know about large bowel diverticulosis?

Diverticulosis occurs when small pouches form through weaker areas of the large bowel wall. It may be found during a scan or bowel examination done for another reason. The pouches themselves do not necessarily cause discomfort. Diverticular disease refers to the wider group of problems involving these pouches, including inflammation or bleeding.

Some people notice abdominal pain, bloating or constipation, but these symptoms can have many causes. A clinician considers the pattern, examination and any bowel changes before deciding what evaluation is appropriate.

Aim for regular bowel movements with fluids, movement and fibre from foods that suit you. Increase fibre gradually to reduce bloating, and do not strain or ignore the urge to pass stool.
