What should you know about large bed bug bites?

Bed bugs feed at night and their bites may appear as itchy red, pink, or swollen spots. Several marks may sit in a line, cluster, or exposed area, but the pattern is not proof of the cause. Some people develop a large local reaction, while others have little visible change. Scratching can break the skin and allow irritation or infection to develop.

A rash that appears after travel, sleeping in a different room, or finding dark specks, shed skins, or insects around mattress seams may raise suspicion. Other bites, eczema, hives, and infections can look similar, so persistent or unusual swelling deserves clinical review.

Wash the area gently, use a cool compress, and keep fingernails short. Avoid squeezing the welts or applying household chemicals. A pharmacist or clinician may recommend an oral antihistamine for itch or a topical corticosteroid for inflammation, taking into account age, pregnancy, other medicines, and the site of application.

Inspect sleeping areas and arrange professional pest control if bed bugs are suspected. Launder suitable bedding and clothing using heat that the fabric can tolerate, and follow local pest-control guidance. Treating the rash alone will not stop new bites if the infestation remains.

Seek urgent help for swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, trouble breathing, faintness, or widespread blistering. Arrange medical review if redness spreads, the area becomes hot and painful, pus appears, fever develops, or the swelling is not settling.
