What should you know about a large anal skin tag?

Skin tags are soft pieces of tissue that may hang from a narrow base or form a broader fold. Around the anus, friction, moisture, previous irritation, or a healed tear or swollen vein can make the area feel uneven. A tag may be flesh-coloured or darker and can become bothersome during wiping, exercise, or prolonged sitting.

Not every lump near the anus is a skin tag. A haemorrhoid, wart, abscess, fissure-related swelling, or another lesion can look similar. A private clinical examination helps identify the cause, especially when the lump is firm, painful, inflamed, or newly different.

Keep the area gently clean and dry, use water or an unscented cleanser, and pat rather than scrub. Loose breathable clothing can reduce rubbing. Do not cut, tie off, freeze, or apply wart or acid products to the tag yourself; anal skin is delicate and an incorrect treatment can cause bleeding or injury.

If the tag is confirmed and causes hygiene problems or repeated irritation, a clinician may discuss skin tag removal. Depending on its size and attachment, options can include excision, electrosurgery, or another carefully selected technique. Cryotherapy is not suitable for every lesion or every location.

Arrange prompt assessment for significant pain, increasing swelling, pus, fever, repeated bleeding, a hard fixed lump, a rapidly changing surface, or a sore that does not heal. Sudden severe pain with swelling needs timely review because it may reflect a problem other than a simple tag.
