Microdermabrasion is a mechanical exfoliation treatment. A handpiece may use a diamond tip or fine crystals, together with controlled suction, to loosen the outermost layer of dead skin. It is used on areas such as the face, neck, chest, or hands, depending on the treatment plan. The result is usually a temporarily smoother-feeling surface, not a treatment for deep scars, active infection, or every cause of uneven pigmentation.

Mild pinkness, tightness, dryness, or sensitivity can occur afterward. The intensity depends on the skin, the area treated, the pressure, and how often treatment is repeated.

Have a trained practitioner check for active acne lesions, cold sores, eczema, dermatitis, sunburn, open skin, or a recent procedure before treatment. Tell them about retinoids, exfoliating acids, medicines that affect healing, and any tendency to develop dark marks after irritation.

Arrive with clean skin and avoid harsh scrubs or waxing around the treatment area. Do not increase suction or repeat passes at home to chase a stronger result; excess friction can cause inflammation and pigment change.

Contact a clinician if redness becomes more intense instead of easing, or if you develop increasing warmth, swelling, pus, blistering, marked pain, or spreading tenderness. Urgent assessment is appropriate for facial swelling with trouble breathing, eye symptoms, or a rapidly worsening reaction. A persistent change in skin colour or texture also deserves review before another session.
