What dengue means
Dengue is a viral infection spread by infected mosquitoes. A person with dengue may develop fever, chills, headache, muscle aches or joint pain. Some people also develop nausea, a rash or easy bruising. The illness can change as the fever improves, so feeling temporarily better does not always mean monitoring is no longer needed.
A clinician may assess your symptoms, hydration and bleeding risk. Tell them about recent travel or mosquito exposure, medicines you take and any pregnancy or long-term health condition.
What to do
Rest and drink fluids regularly. Use only fever or pain medicines recommended by a clinician or pharmacist, because some medicines can increase bleeding risk. Reduce mosquito bites while unwell by using screens, covered clothing and an appropriate repellent, helping prevent mosquitoes from carrying the virus to others.
When to seek medical care
Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding from the nose or gums, blood in vomit or stool, marked drowsiness, breathing difficulty, faintness or very little urine. Contact a clinician promptly for a persistent fever, worsening weakness or new easy bruising. Children, pregnant people and those with chronic illness need tailored advice.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms fit dengue, which fluids and medicines are suitable, and what warning signs require immediate help. Mention the fever pattern, mosquito exposure, travel and any bleeding or bruising.
