What should you know about a Lamictal rash on the face?

Facial redness, bumps, itch or swelling can have several causes. A drug rash is a key possibility during Lamictal treatment, but contact dermatitis from cosmetics, atopic dermatitis, heat rash, psoriasis, ringworm and scabies can also affect the face. The timing of the change, its spread and symptoms elsewhere are more useful than a photograph alone.

The face deserves extra attention because swelling can affect the lips, eyelids, mouth or airway. A rash may begin in one area and change over time, so document it and arrange prompt clinical review.

Call the Lamictal prescriber or seek urgent medical advice and explain when the facial change began, whether the dose recently changed, and what other products or medicines you use. Do not restart a missed course or change the dose without instructions, unless emergency clinicians direct you. Take clear photographs without applying makeup over the area.

Wash gently with lukewarm water, avoid new skincare products and do not use steroid or antibiotic creams on the face unless prescribed for this episode. Keep the medicine packet and a full list of products ready for review.

Get emergency help for swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, breathing difficulty, eye pain or vision change, mouth sores, blistering, peeling skin, severe facial pain, fever or a rapidly spreading rash. These symptoms can require immediate treatment.

Ask whether the medicine should be continued, how the face and mouth will be checked, which products are safe, and which changes mean you should return immediately.
