What should you know about lactose intolerance throwing up?

Short answer
Vomiting can occur with digestive upset after dairy, but repeated or severe vomiting needs assessment because lactose intolerance is not the only possible cause.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical intolerance pattern
- Gas, cramps, bloating or diarrhoea after lactose.
- Vomiting priority
- Protect fluids and watch for allergy or dehydration signs.
- Avoid
- Repeated home challenges with the suspected trigger.
Why vomiting deserves care
Lactose intolerance more commonly causes gas, cramps, bloating and diarrhoea when undigested lactose is fermented in the bowel. Nausea or vomiting can accompany a broader digestive reaction, but vomiting after milk may also reflect infection, food poisoning, reflux, migraine, medication effects or milk allergy. Allergy can include hives, swelling, wheezing or throat symptoms and requires urgent attention. See [Lactose Intolerance](/conditions/lactose-intolerance/) and symptom information on [Bloating](/symptoms/bloating/) and [Diarrhoea](/symptoms/diarrhoea/).
What to do at home
Pause the suspected dairy product and take small, frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink if you can keep fluids down. When nausea settles, try bland foods in small amounts and avoid alcohol and heavy meals. Do not repeatedly challenge yourself with milk to prove the cause. Record what you ate, how soon symptoms began, other symptoms and whether anyone else became ill. A clinician may recommend [Food Intolerance Testing](/treatments/diagnostics-and-screening/food-intolerance-testing/) or another evaluation. [Nutrition Counselling](/treatments/lifestyle-and-wellness/nutrition-counselling/) can help if dairy avoidance continues.
Warning signs
Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, throat tightness, facial swelling, collapse or widespread hives. Get urgent medical advice for repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, severe [Abdominal Pain](/symptoms/abdominal-pain/), blood or coffee-ground material in vomit, green vomit, confusion, very little urine or marked dizziness. Children, older adults and people with chronic illness can become dehydrated quickly and should be assessed early.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the reaction sounds like intolerance, allergy or another illness; whether you need allergy assessment; how to replace dairy safely; and which dehydration signs should prompt immediate care.
