What should you know about lactoferrin lactose intolerance?

Lactoferrin is a protein found naturally in milk and other body fluids. Lactose is a carbohydrate, or milk sugar. The enzyme lactase breaks lactose down in the small intestine; lactoferrin does not perform that job.

When lactose is poorly digested, it reaches the large intestine and may be fermented by bacteria. This can cause abdominal pain, bloating, gas and diarrhoea after dairy foods. Those symptoms describe a possible pattern, not proof that lactoferrin or lactose is responsible.

Note which foods cause symptoms and how quickly they occur. A clinician can help separate lactose intolerance from milk-protein allergy, another food reaction, infection or a bowel condition. Do not remove all dairy for a long period without a plan for calcium and other nutrients.

Arrange an assessment if symptoms persist, occur without dairy, or affect hydration and normal meals. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling or widespread hives after milk, as well as severe pain, repeated vomiting, blood in stool or fainting. These symptoms need prompt evaluation and should not be labelled lactose intolerance automatically.
