What should you know about lactic acid blood test?

Lactate is produced when cells release energy. The liver and kidneys help clear it, while blood flow and oxygen delivery affect how much is made. A raised result can occur for several reasons, including strenuous exertion, reduced oxygen delivery, severe infection, some medicines or problems affecting clearance.

The number is interpreted with your symptoms, examination and other tests. It does not diagnose one condition by itself. Conditions such as severe dehydration, kidney disease or serious infection may be considered when the overall picture points that way; the test is not a general measure of tiredness.

Follow the laboratory instructions. Tell the clinician about recent exercise, medicines, supplements and any difficulty with blood tests. Depending on the reason for testing, the sample may be taken from a vein or another site, and the area may be kept still because muscle activity can affect the reading.

Ask when and how the result will be explained. A clinician may repeat the test or compare it with blood count, kidney tests, infection checks and examination findings. Do not interpret an isolated result without that context.

If this test was ordered because you feel acutely unwell, follow the care team’s instructions promptly. Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, new confusion, fainting, severe weakness, blue or cold skin, or rapidly worsening illness. These signs can indicate a serious problem with oxygen delivery, circulation or infection.
