Short answer

Lack of appetite, nausea and fatigue often occur during illness or dehydration, but persistent or worsening symptoms need medical review.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main concern
Nausea can reduce both food and fluid intake
Track
Vomiting, urine, fever, pain and medicine changes
Support
Frequent sips and small tolerated meals

How the symptoms fit together

Nausea can reduce food and fluid intake, while dehydration can add tiredness, dizziness and a dry mouth. Anaemia, coeliac disease, chronic kidney disease and COVID-19 can each present with some combination of fatigue, appetite change or nausea. Alcohol use disorder may also affect nutrition and energy.

Burnout and chronic fatigue syndrome can involve profound fatigue, but nausea or appetite loss may have another cause at the same time. The combination does not identify one diagnosis by itself; timing, medicines, hydration, sleep and other symptoms guide assessment.

Steps that may help

Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink if tolerated. Try plain, small meals, cool foods or bland snacks, and avoid strong smells if they trigger nausea. Rest, but move gently when able. Keep a note of vomiting, urine changes, fever, pain, bowel symptoms and medicines.

Arrange a clinician review when symptoms do not settle, keep returning, or interfere with eating, drinking or daily tasks. Do not stop prescribed medicine without advice.

When to seek care

Seek urgent care for confusion, fainting, severe abdominal or chest pain, blood in vomit or stool, severe headache, breathing difficulty, very little urine, or inability to keep fluids down. Rapid worsening, marked weakness, or signs of dehydration such as dizziness on standing also warrant prompt attention.

Questions for your doctor

Tell your doctor when each symptom began and ask whether dehydration, infection, anaemia, digestive disease or a medicine effect should be checked. Ask which fluids and foods are suitable, whether tests are needed, and what warning signs should change your plan.
