Once inflammation has led to scar tissue or bone-like change in the inner ear, treatment may not be able to reverse that structural change. Care focuses on finding and treating active disease, protecting the better-hearing ear, improving balance, and discussing hearing rehabilitation when needed.

The labyrinth is the inner-ear system involved in hearing and balance. Labyrinthitis ossificans describes fibrosis and ossification, meaning scar-like tissue and bone formation, within this system after significant inflammation or injury. It can follow labyrinthitis, meningitis, trauma, or another inner-ear problem; the exact cause matters when planning care.
