Short answer

A lab urine test examines a urine sample for signs of infection, blood, protein, glucose, and other health changes.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What is a lab urine test?

A lab urine test examines a urine sample for signs of infection, blood, protein, glucose, and other health changes. It may include a visual check, chemical strip testing, and examination under a microscope. A culture may be added when infection is suspected, allowing the laboratory to look for bacteria and guide treatment choices.

What the result can mean

White blood cells, bacteria, or nitrites can support a urinary infection, while blood may have several causes, including irritation, stones, infection, or a prostate problem. Protein can point to kidney stress, and glucose may prompt assessment of blood sugar. One abnormal finding does not establish a diagnosis; hydration, medicines, exercise, menstruation, and collection technique can affect the sample.

What to do next

Follow the collection instructions and use a clean container. A midstream sample is often requested: begin urinating, collect the sample without touching the inside of the container, and finish in the toilet. Ask how quickly it should reach the laboratory. Do not start leftover antibiotics based on a home result; a clinician may need the culture and your symptoms before choosing treatment.

When to seek care

Seek prompt medical advice for fever with urinary symptoms, pain in the side or back, vomiting, visible blood, confusion, or difficulty passing urine. These features can signal a kidney infection or obstruction and need assessment. Contact a clinician sooner if you are pregnant, have a weakened immune system, or symptoms are worsening.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which findings were outside the expected range, whether a culture was performed, and whether you need a repeat sample. Clarify how your symptoms fit the result, whether medicines could have affected it, and what changes should trigger urgent review.
