Diverticulosis: what to know

Short answer
Diverticulosis means small pouches have formed in the bowel wall; it may cause no symptoms, but new pain or bleeding needs medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Definition
- Small pouches in the bowel wall.
- Key distinction
- Diverticulosis is not the same as inflamed diverticulitis.
What the term means
Diverticula are small pouches that push outward through weaker areas of the bowel wall. Diverticulosis describes their presence and is often found during a scan or bowel examination for another reason. It is different from diverticulitis, where a pouch becomes inflamed and may cause persistent abdominal pain, fever, or tenderness.
Some people notice bloating, altered bowel habits, constipation, or abdominal discomfort, but these symptoms have many possible causes. Diverticulosis does not automatically explain every bowel change, and rectal bleeding should not be dismissed as harmless.
Looking after bowel health
If your clinician has confirmed diverticulosis, build fibre into meals gradually through vegetables, fruit, beans, and whole grains, and drink enough fluid for your needs. Regular movement and responding to the urge to open your bowels can support a comfortable bowel routine. Sudden large changes may worsen bloating, so adjust slowly.
A GP Consultation can review pain, constipation, medicines, and any bleeding. Nutrition Counselling may help if you need a tailored fibre plan or have another digestive condition. Do not begin laxatives or make restrictive diet changes without advice.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, fever, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, inability to pass stool or gas, dizziness, or significant rectal bleeding. Prompt review is also sensible when bowel symptoms are new, persistent, or changing.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms fit uncomplicated diverticulosis or need investigation, how quickly to increase fibre, and which pain medicines or laxatives are suitable. Mention weight change, bleeding, fever, constipation, and any previous bowel tests.
