What should you know about L1 kyphoplasty?

L1 is the first lumbar vertebra, near the transition between the lower thoracic spine and the lower back. A compression fracture there may cause focal back pain that increases with standing, walking, or changing position. Imaging helps determine whether the fracture is recent, stable, and a possible source of symptoms.

In kyphoplasty, a clinician guides instruments through a small skin opening, gently creates a cavity with a balloon, and fills the space with bone cement. The procedure supports the injured vertebra; it does not repair every cause of lower-back pain or automatically treat nerve compression.

Before treatment, provide your medication list and describe weakness, numbness, fever, infection, bleeding problems, and previous anaesthetic reactions. Ask how blood thinners, diabetes medicines, food, and drink should be managed. Your clinician may also investigate bone fragility and discuss ways to reduce future fracture risk.

Follow the discharge instructions for walking, wound care, bathing, driving, and lifting. Keep the puncture site clean and watch for changes. Gradually increasing activity and following an agreed rehabilitation plan can help restore confidence and movement, but the pace should match your symptoms and clinical advice.

Seek urgent care for new weakness in either leg, numbness in the saddle area, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, or sudden severe pain. Call the treating team about fever, wound drainage, spreading redness, or pain that escalates rather than settles. These symptoms require assessment rather than waiting for a routine review.

Ask whether the L1 fracture is the source of your pain, what the scan shows, why kyphoplasty is recommended, what alternatives are available, what restrictions apply afterward, and how osteoporosis or another bone-weakening cause will be addressed.
