What should you know about kypho vertebroplasty?

Vertebroplasty uses imaging guidance to place bone cement through a needle into a fractured or weakened vertebral body. The cement hardens inside the bone and can support the damaged area. Kyphoplasty uses a small balloon first; the balloon creates a cavity and may help restore some vertebral height before cement is introduced. Neither procedure treats every cause of back pain.

These procedures are considered in selected vertebral compression fractures after review of symptoms, imaging, bone health, medicines, and other treatments. The vertebra’s age, shape, stability, and proximity to nerves matter.

Your clinician may review scans, blood-thinning medicines, infection risk, and anaesthesia needs. Ask what activity is allowed after the procedure and how osteoporosis or another underlying cause will be managed. Recovery may include careful walking, posture work, pain control, and physiotherapy once cleared. Protecting bone health remains relevant because treating one vertebra does not prevent another fracture.

Follow instructions about dressing care and medicines. Do not drive or lift until the clinical team confirms that it is safe for you.

Seek prompt medical advice for new or worsening back pain, fever, increasing wound redness, leg weakness, numbness, or trouble passing urine or stool after treatment. Sudden breathlessness, chest pain, collapse, or severe weakness needs emergency care. These symptoms can signal a complication or a separate urgent problem.

Ask which vertebra is affected, whether vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty is being proposed, what benefit is expected, what alternatives exist, how cement is monitored, and how the underlying bone weakness will be treated.
