Psoriasis is an immune-mediated skin condition in which skin cells build up too quickly, producing areas of inflammation and scale. It can affect different body sites and may come and go. Itchy skin, dry skin, redness, peeling, cracking, or a rash can occur, but these symptoms also have many other causes.

A public image cannot establish whether a patch is psoriasis, eczema, irritation, infection, makeup, or a lighting effect. Diagnosis relies on the pattern, symptoms, duration, examination, and sometimes a closer review of the skin.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if scaly or inflamed areas keep returning, spread, bleed from cracking, or interfere with sleep. Treatment depends on location and severity and may include prescribed creams, light-based treatment, or medicines that calm immune activity. A clinician can also check whether joint stiffness or swelling needs attention, since psoriasis may involve more than skin.

Seek prompt medical advice for rapidly spreading redness, extensive peeling, fever, pus, severe pain, or skin that is cracking deeply. Urgent assessment is needed if a widespread rash is accompanied by feeling very unwell, or if painful swollen joints develop.
