What should you know about KP rash?

Rashes may appear as flat colour change, raised bumps, dry scale, blisters, welts or cracked skin. Itch can suggest irritation or inflammation, while pain, warmth, pus or crusting can signal infection or a stronger inflammatory response. Atopic dermatitis often causes dry itchy patches; contact dermatitis follows exposure to an irritant or allergen. Heat rash favours warm, sweaty areas, whereas ringworm may form a scaly edge. Scabies often causes intense itch and may affect household contacts.

A medication history, recent products, travel, heat exposure and the distribution of the rash help distinguish possibilities such as drug rash, psoriasis or intertrigo.

Use lukewarm water, a gentle fragrance-free cleanser and a bland moisturiser. Keep sweaty folds cool and dry, avoid scratching, and stop any newly introduced product until the cause is clearer. Do not apply leftover steroid, antibiotic or antifungal cream without advice, because the wrong product can mask changes or irritate the skin. Take a photo when the rash is visible and note exposures, medicines and symptoms.

Seek urgent medical care for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, a rapidly spreading rash, skin peeling, purple spots that do not fade with pressure, severe pain, high fever, or involvement of the eyes or mouth. Arrange a review for a persistent, recurrent or infected-looking rash, especially after a new medicine.
