Keratosis Pilaris and Laser Hair Removal

Keratosis pilaris forms when keratin plugs collect around hair follicles, often on the upper arms, thighs, cheeks, or buttocks. Laser hair removal targets pigment in growing hair follicles; it is used to reduce hair growth and may make shaving-related bumps or ingrown hairs less troublesome. The rough texture and redness of keratosis pilaris can still need separate skin care. A clinician should distinguish it from follicle inflammation, razor bumps, or hidradenitis suppurativa when lesions are painful, draining, or deep.

Have the area examined before treatment if the diagnosis is uncertain or the skin is actively inflamed. Follow the clinic’s instructions about shaving, sun exposure, deodorants, and products that may irritate the treatment area. Do not pick at plugs or scrub aggressively between sessions. A bland moisturiser can support the skin barrier, while a clinician may suggest a keratolytic such as lactic acid, urea, or salicylic acid for the texture. Laser choice depends on skin tone, hair colour, body site, and treatment goals; options may include Alexandrite Laser, Diode Laser, or Nd:YAG Laser.

Contact the treating clinic for blistering, marked swelling, worsening pain, pus, or a change in skin colour that does not settle as advised. Arrange a dermatology review if bumps are deep, recurrent, tender, or leaving scars, because those features may point away from uncomplicated keratosis pilaris. Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading redness with fever or feeling unwell.
