Kojic Acid for Burn Scars: What to Know

A burn can leave colour change, a raised or firm scar, a depressed area, or a combination. Kojic acid acts on pigment production near the skin surface; it does not replace missing tissue or remodel dense scar tissue. Fresh, tender, crusted, weeping, or cracked skin should not be treated with a brightening product.

Scar colour can also reflect ongoing inflammation. Irritating the area may prolong redness or create additional darkening, especially after a deeper skin injury. A clinician can distinguish pigment from structural scarring before recommending treatment.

Wait until the burn is completely closed and comfortable, then ask a dermatologist whether a small patch test is appropriate. Use a bland moisturiser, avoid picking or abrasive scrubs, and protect the area from sunlight. Stop immediately if it stings strongly, becomes red, or develops scaling or swelling.

For texture or more established scarring, a clinician may discuss Fractional Laser Treatment, Scar Revision Surgery, or Skin Graft depending on depth, movement, and the condition of nearby skin. These options are not interchangeable and require an examination.

Get medical advice if the area remains open, increasingly painful, warm, swollen, draining, or foul-smelling. Arrange a scar review if it restricts movement, grows beyond the original injury, becomes very itchy, or changes unexpectedly. A new colour change in a healed scar also merits assessment when its cause is unclear.

Ask whether the mark is pigment, scar tissue, or both; whether the surface is healed enough for kojic acid; and how to protect it while it settles. Ask which treatment matches the scar's depth and whether a test area is needed before a procedure.
