What should you know about kocher method shoulder dislocation reduction?

A dislocated shoulder occurs when the upper arm bone moves out of the socket. The named method uses controlled positioning of the arm, but the technique has potential to harm nerves, blood vessels, bone, or nearby soft tissue if applied to the wrong injury or with excessive force. A clinician first checks circulation, sensation, movement, and signs of fracture. Imaging may be needed before or after the joint is repositioned.

Modern shoulder reduction is selected according to the direction of dislocation, muscle spasm, pain, associated injury, and the person's overall condition. The label of a technique does not make it suitable for every shoulder.

Do not attempt to pull or rotate a visibly deformed shoulder yourself, and do not let an untrained person practise a reduction manoeuvre. Support the arm in the position that causes least discomfort, avoid food or drink in case a procedure is needed, and seek emergency assessment. After reduction, follow immobilisation instructions and attend review; physiotherapy may restore safe movement and strength.

A suspected dislocation needs urgent medical care, especially after a fall, collision, or forceful movement. Call emergency services for a cold, pale, or blue hand, absent pulse, new numbness, inability to move the fingers, severe bleeding, or uncontrolled pain. Worsening pain after reduction also requires prompt review.
