What should you know about knotless suture anchor?

During some arthroscopic repairs, a surgeon places the anchor in bone and passes attached suture through the injured tissue. The suture is tensioned so the tissue rests against its intended attachment site. A knotless design uses the anchor's locking mechanism to hold that tension. The anchor may be made from metal or a medical polymer, depending on the repair and the surgeon's preference.

The device does not heal tissue by itself. Healing depends on the repaired tissue, blood supply, protection during recovery, and a gradual return of movement and strength. Knotless anchors can be used in procedures such as labral, meniscus, rotator cuff, or shoulder stabilisation repairs.

Ask which tissue is being repaired, where the anchor will sit, and whether the implant is expected to remain in place. After surgery, follow the sling, brace, weight-bearing, and exercise instructions for your specific repair. Do not test the repair early by lifting, pulling, or returning to sport before clearance. Keep scheduled reviews because the clinician can check wound healing, movement, and progression of rehabilitation.

Contact your surgical team promptly for increasing redness, warmth, drainage, fever, worsening pain, new numbness, or a sudden loss of movement. Seek urgent help if the limb becomes cold or pale, severe swelling develops quickly, or you cannot control the pain. These symptoms need assessment and should not be attributed to the anchor without an examination.
