What should you know about knee oedema?

Short answer
Knee oedema is swelling caused by fluid collecting in or around the tissues, and its meaning depends on the onset, appearance, symptoms, injury history, and other body areas involved.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Meaning
- Oedema describes fluid-related swelling, not a single diagnosis.
- Useful clues
- Onset, redness, warmth, itch, pain, injury, and other swelling guide assessment.
- Emergency signs
- Breathing difficulty, throat swelling, fever, or rapidly spreading redness need urgent help.
What knee swelling can look like
The skin may look puffy, stretched, shiny, red, or unchanged in colour. Swelling can be soft or firm, affect one knee or both, and occur with warmth, itch, pain, stiffness, or a dent that remains briefly after pressure. The word oedema describes fluid-related swelling; it does not identify the cause by itself.
Skin swelling with itchy raised areas may fit Hives, while deeper swelling of the skin can occur with Angioedema. Redness, warmth, tenderness, and fever raise concern for Cellulitis and need medical attention.
What to do now
Notice when the swelling began, whether it followed an injury or new product, and whether it is spreading. Remove tight clothing or jewellery near the area, rest the joint from aggravating activity, and avoid massaging a red or painful swollen area until the cause is clearer. Do not start leftover antibiotics or use steroid creams without advice.
Take a photograph to compare changes and arrange an assessment if swelling persists, returns, or limits movement. A clinician may examine the skin, joint, circulation, and medicines before recommending care.
When to seek urgent help
Seek urgent medical help for sudden swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, breathing difficulty, faintness, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, fever, or a very hot tender knee. Prompt assessment is also needed when one-sided swelling follows significant injury or movement becomes markedly restricted.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the swelling is in the skin, joint, or deeper tissue, what symptoms change the urgency, which medicines may contribute, and what monitoring or tests are appropriate.

Questions people ask
Is knee oedema always a skin problem?
No. Swelling may involve skin, soft tissue, the joint, or deeper structures, so examination matters.
Can I massage a swollen knee?
Avoid massage when swelling is red, hot, painful, or unexplained until a clinician has advised you.
