What should you know about knee cap bursitis?

Short answer
Knee cap bursitis causes tenderness and swelling over the kneecap, often after repeated kneeling or pressure.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical location
- Directly in front of the kneecap
- Common trigger
- Repeated kneeling or a knock
- Avoid
- Pressure or puncturing the swollen area
What it means
A bursa is a thin, fluid-filled cushion that helps tissues move smoothly. When the bursa in front of the kneecap becomes irritated, the area may look puffy and feel sore when touched or kneeling. The skin can feel warm. Repeated floor work, sports impact, or a direct knock can trigger it. Infection is less common but needs prompt medical attention, especially when redness, warmth, worsening pain or fever develops. Swelling around a joint can have several causes; related information is available under Joint Swelling.
What you can do
Reduce kneeling and avoid leaning on the front of the knee while it settles. Rest from activities that increase pain, use a cold pack wrapped in cloth for short periods, and keep the leg comfortably raised when resting. Do not press, puncture or massage a visibly inflamed lump. A clinician may suggest suitable anti-inflammatory medication after checking your health and other medicines. If fluid remains troublesome, treatment options can include Cortisone Injection or Joint Aspiration, depending on the cause.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment if swelling persists, returns repeatedly, limits bending, or follows an injury that makes walking difficult. Seek urgent care for rapidly increasing swelling, marked redness or heat, drainage, fever, severe pain, or inability to move the knee. These features can point to infection or a more significant injury and should not be managed by home care alone.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the swelling is in the bursa or inside the knee, whether infection needs checking, which activities should be paused, and whether medication or fluid removal is appropriate. Mention any skin break, recent injection, fever, or medicines you take.

Questions people ask
Can knee cap bursitis affect walking?
It can make kneeling and bending uncomfortable, and pain may alter your walking if swelling is pronounced.
Should you drain a swollen bursa at home?
No. Puncturing it can introduce infection; a clinician should decide whether aspiration is needed.
