What should you know about knee arthrodesis nail?

Short answer

A knee arthrodesis nail is an internal support used to hold the thigh and shin bones in alignment while a damaged knee is fused.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Purpose
Supports alignment while the femur and tibia fuse
Main change
The knee remains stable but does not bend
Rehabilitation
Strength, balance, transfers, and activity adaptation

What the procedure changes

Knee arthrodesis, also called Joint Fusion Surgery, joins the femur and tibia so the knee no longer bends. An intramedullary nail sits inside the bones and is secured to help maintain position while bone healing develops. Fusion may be considered when the joint is severely damaged, painful, unstable, or affected by infection and other reconstructive options are unsuitable. It trades knee movement for a stable leg, so walking mechanics, sitting, stairs, and footwear may feel different afterward.

The nail is different from a Plate and Screws construct because it runs within the bone rather than along its surface. The choice depends on bone quality, alignment, previous operations, infection history, and the surgeon's plan.

Preparing and recovering

Before surgery, discuss weight-bearing limits, wound care, smoking or nicotine use, medicines, and how you will manage stairs and bathing. Afterward, use walking aids exactly as instructed and attend follow-up visits so alignment and bone healing can be checked. Rehabilitation focuses on strength, transfers, balance, and adapting daily activities; it cannot restore bending at the fused knee. Ask about pain control, blood-clot prevention, and signs of infection before leaving hospital.

When to contact the surgical team

Contact the team promptly for increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, worsening pain, new calf swelling, or a sudden change in the leg's position. Seek urgent care for chest pain, severe breathlessness, a cold or blue foot, or new weakness or numbness. Do not change weight-bearing status because the leg feels better; healing and stability need clinical review.

Questions before deciding

Ask: Why is fusion recommended for my knee? Why is a nail suitable for my bone and alignment? What knee movement will be lost, and how might walking change? What are the alternatives, including Joint Fusion Surgery techniques or replacement options? What signs suggest infection, delayed healing, or hardware trouble?

Questions people ask

Will a nail make the fused knee bend?

No. The nail supports the fusion; the goal is a stable leg rather than restored knee bending.

Is a knee arthrodesis nail removable?

Removal is not routine and depends on healing, symptoms, infection, or hardware problems assessed by the surgical team.
