What should you know about Kiva kyphoplasty?

A vertebral compression fracture occurs when one of the spine’s supporting bones weakens and collapses. Kiva kyphoplasty uses a small access path to place an implant or delivery system in the vertebra, followed by bone cement to support the treated area. The exact technique depends on the device, fracture shape and the clinician’s plan.

The procedure is considered for selected patients whose pain and functional limits are linked to a vertebral fracture. It does not treat every cause of back pain, restore every spinal change, or remove the need to address bone weakness. Imaging and examination help determine whether the fracture is active and suitable for treatment.

Ask how the fracture was confirmed, what anaesthesia is planned, and whether medicines that affect bleeding need adjustment. Tell the team about allergies, infection, pregnancy possibility and other medical conditions. Recovery varies with the fracture and general health. A clinician may encourage gradual movement and review pain, wound healing and function. Bone-health care, fall prevention and treatment for osteoporosis may be needed to reduce the chance of further fractures.

After treatment, seek urgent help for new leg weakness, numbness, difficulty walking, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain, breathing difficulty, fever, or increasing wound redness and drainage. Sudden severe back pain or pain that keeps worsening also warrants prompt review.
