Kiran PET scan: what to know

A small amount of FDG Radiotracer may be given through a vein. Cells that use more glucose can take up more of this tracer. The PET images show activity, while the CT images show body structures and help locate that activity. The combined study can help a team look for disease, assess spread, plan treatment, or check how a known condition is responding.

Increased tracer uptake is not specific to cancer: inflammation and infection can also appear active. Some cancers may show less uptake than expected. A PET-CT result therefore needs to be interpreted with your symptoms, examination, other scans, and sometimes a biopsy.

Follow the imaging centre's instructions about eating, drinking, medicines, and physical activity. Tell the team if you have diabetes, could be pregnant, are breastfeeding, have had a recent infection, or may have difficulty lying still. Wear comfortable clothing and allow time for the tracer to circulate before scanning. Afterward, follow the centre's advice about fluids, urination, and contact with other people.

The scan may be used when doctors are assessing conditions such as Lymphoma or Cancer of Unknown Primary. Your report may recommend comparison with earlier imaging or another test; that recommendation is not itself a diagnosis.

Tell staff immediately about pain, dizziness, breathing difficulty, or swelling after the tracer injection. After leaving, seek medical help for severe breathing difficulty, facial swelling, fainting, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Contact the imaging centre if you are unsure about post-scan instructions or if you missed preparation requirements.

Ask: Why is this scan being recommended? What preparation applies to my medicines or diabetes? What can the PET images answer that a CT or MRI cannot? Could infection affect the result? When and how will the findings be discussed, and might I need a biopsy or another scan?
