Kinds of skin tags: what should you know?

A slender, dangling tag may rub against a collar, necklace, bra strap, or skin fold. A sessile tag has a wider attachment and can look more like a small bump. Tags may be smooth or wrinkled, and friction can make one look darker or swollen. They commonly appear around the neck, underarms, eyelids, groin, or beneath the breasts.

A skin tag is not the only growth that can occur in these areas. A firm, rough, scaly, painful, ulcerated, or persistently bleeding lesion may need a different diagnosis. Colour change after twisting or rubbing can happen, but a growth that changes without obvious irritation should be examined rather than assumed to be a tag.

Leave a tag alone if it is stable and does not bother you. Keep folds dry, reduce rubbing where practical, and do not tie off, cut, or burn the growth yourself. A clinician can confirm the diagnosis before removal. An eyelid growth that affects vision or repeatedly irritates the eye also merits professional review.

Ask how the growth was identified, whether it needs laboratory examination after removal, which option best fits its location, and how to protect the area while it heals. If several growths appear, ask whether anything else could be causing them and how to distinguish a new lesion from a recurrent one.
