How to treat ringworm safely

Ringworm is not caused by a worm. It is a fungal infection that can produce an itchy, expanding rash with a scaly edge and clearer-looking skin toward the centre. The pattern varies on the body, scalp, feet, and nails. Skin rash and scaly skin have many possible causes, so a clinician may need to assess the appearance, location, and duration before treatment. The infection can pass through close skin contact or shared towels, clothing, brushes, and sports equipment.

For a limited skin infection, topical antifungal treatment may be suitable; use it for the full course advised even if the rash feels better earlier. Scalp, nail, widespread, or stubborn infection may require oral antifungal treatment. Keep the area clean and dry, wash hands after applying medicine, avoid scratching, and do not share towels or clothing. Wash and dry fabrics that touch the affected skin, and arrange assessment for pets or household contacts with suspicious lesions.

Seek medical advice if the rash affects the scalp or nails, covers a broad area, recurs, or fails to improve with correctly used treatment. Get prompt care for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, pus, fever, or involvement around the eyes. Children, people with reduced immunity, and anyone taking several medicines may need tailored treatment rather than self-care alone.
